Our board of directors and senior leadership includes the following people.

Joseph (Joe) Duffey

CEO and President

Joseph Duffey’s dedication to community service extends beyond his role at NewCourtland. He also serves as the Finance Chair on the board of Melmark Inc., a multi-state, not-for-profit human service provider. Additionally, he Chairs the board of The Tile Works of Bucks County, a national treasure preserving the work of Henry Mercer and his Moravian Pottery and Tile Works.

Mary Naylor

Dr. Mary D. Naylor, PhD, RN, FAAN

Board Secretary

Dr. Naylor is a pioneer in designing, evaluating, and spreading healthcare innovations that have significantly improved the outcomes of chronically ill older adults and their family caregivers while reducing healthcare costs. In collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of clinical scholars and health services researchers, her work has resulted in the Transitional Care Model, a cost-effective advanced practice nurse-led model to improve the transitions of older adults who are navigating complex and often fragmented systems of care. She is also the creator and moderator of Caregiving NOW, a two-year initiative designed to reshape the caregiving landscape, enhancing the well-being of all caregivers.

As Co-Chair of the Econsult Solutions (ESI) Board of Directors, Mr. Mullin provides clients with expertise in economic development, public finance, policy analysis, real estate, energy, and business and government strategies. He served as President since the firm’s inception and is now guiding strategic planning and development of the firm for its posterity.

Dr. Cornelius D. Pitts

Dr. Cornelius D. Pitts, PharmD, CMTM, RPh

Board Trustee

Dr. Pitts is a founding director of Miriam Medical Clinics. He also directs the Pharmaceutical Care Program at Miriam and has academic affiliations with Temple University and the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. Dr. Pitts served in various capacities at GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals for 26 years, including as a director of neuroscience clinical research. He is Director of the COVID-19 Vaccination Project at the Temple University, Lewis Katz School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA.

Pam Howard

Pam Howard, RN

VP of Healthcare Services

Ms. Howard oversees healthcare delivery across multiple community initiatives and is responsible for finding new ways to integrate healthcare and housing to meet the individual and changing needs of the underserved while honoring and promoting the staff who care for them. She is a registered nurse with experience as both a Director of Nursing and a Regional Nurse. Her career is dedicated to creating high-quality healthcare delivery platforms, developing the next generation of nurses, and mentoring future nursing home administrators in the field of Senior Living.

Max Kent

Max Kent

Board Trustee, VP Operations & Chief Operating Officer

Mr. Kent is responsible for corporate operations and planning, new business development, corporate compliance, security, and major capital project implementation. Oversight includes housing, the network-wide environment of care, corporate operations, network-wide logistics, development, quality assurance, risk assessments, project planning, corporate communications, and government relations. Mr. Kent is a highly decorated Army Officer with numerous commendations for meritorious service and excellence and has held positions of increasing responsibility throughout the Department of Defense. He culminated his active federal service as an Executive Officer responsible for logistics operations for an armored calvary regiment. Mr. Kent also serves as a Board Member for the Allegheny West Foundation.

Michael DeMarco

Michael DeMarco, MBA, NHA

VP Finance & Chief Financial Officer

Mr. DeMarco is directly responsible for the network’s financial management division, which includes finance, accounting, audit, contracts, third-party reimbursement, risk insurance, budget, and treasury functions. He is licensed by the Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators in the State of Pennsylvania and holds a Pennsylvania Producer’s License in Life, Accident & Health Authorities.

Paul Funaro

VP Utilization Management

Mr. Funaro is responsible for developing, implementing, and analyzing processes and making strategic and operational decisions to utilize Network resources efficiently, improve access, and ensure quality. He is also charged with advancing and operationalizing technology across the organization to improve efficiencies and outcomes.
